Living Wise - Sermon on the MountSample
Do you know how different fruits grow? Here’s a quick fruit quiz for you! (You can check for the answers below.)
For each kind of fruit answer: A) on trees B) on vines or C) on bushes.
Q1 How do blueberries grow?
Q2 How do apples grow?
Q3 How do cherries grow?
Q4 How do watermelons grow?
Q5 How do grapes grow?
An apple tree can’t grow watermelons, and you can’t pick a cherry from a grapevine. You can tell a tree by its fruit. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talked about fruit. He said, “You can tell each tree by its fruit. Do people pick grapes from bushes? Do they pick figs from thorns? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit. But a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree can’t bear bad fruit. And a bad tree can’t bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down. It is thrown into the fire. You can tell each tree by its fruit.”
Jesus shared wisdom that helped not just those listening when He spoke, but wisdom for us today. Jesus teaches us to to be wise about who we listen to. Look for people who have good fruit in their lives. What kind of things would be good fruit in a person’s life? Do they tell the truth? Does what they do line up with what they say? Do they put God first in their life? Think about the fruit of the spirit; love, joy and peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Living with wisdom means not following someone just because they sound impressive and are full of promises or are popular. Look at what type of person they really are. Be careful who you listen to, look for those who bear good fruit.
