Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
No Fear With God
What is your favourite movie? Do you like romantic comedies? Science fiction? True crime stories? Or those bad guy versus good guy movies? This Psalm is a bit like a movie where evil beings get together and think of a scheme for injustice. They plot and plan until they have the perfect idea. Then at the end, the good guys shoot them with arrows and it’s all over. Evil has been defeated! We get a glimpse in this Psalm of the plots and schemes of the enemy. But, we also see the true power of God.
David‘s life was under constant stress. In this Psalm, he is writing about actual physical enemies. We might not have a physical enemy trying to kill is, but we all have the constant threat of the devil prowling around and scheming against us. David is tempted to fear these enemies. He is very real about his emotions. We are also tempted to fear what the enemy could bring against us in our lives. This Psalm is so encouraging in moments of fear, when the enemy tries to come after us. We know that God “shoots them with His arrows” and can “bring them to ruin”. Asking Him for His perspective when we are feeling overwhelmed by attack from the enemy can bring us great peace. Knowing the power of God and all He is able to do can help us to get through even the hardest times. Asking Him to intervene can change every situation we are in. Like many of the Psalms, this one ends with worship. David knows his rest and refuge is in the Lord, and he wants his heart to glorify and rejoice in Him.
GO DEEP: Are there areas in your life where you feel under attack? If you can’t think of any, stop and ask God if there are places the enemy is attacking in your life. Write down some verses from this Psalm that give you faith and hope in times of feeling attacked. David began with fearing man but ends with trusting God. Ask God to make your trust in Him stronger than your fear of man.
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
