Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the Psalms

DAY 31 OF 161

Out of the Depths

Have you ever been on a long hike and gotten so tired you weren't sure you would make it back to your car? If so, you’ll know that sometimes it’s good to pause, take a look back at how far you’ve walked, and regain the strength and motivation to keep on going. Or maybe you’ve come to that conclusion when writing a 1000-word essay for school or worked on a project at home! Pausing, looking back, and seeing just how far you’ve come can give you a boost to continue and not give up. In this Psalm, David is remembering where he came from and just how much God has done for him.

“I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.
You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;
you spared me from going down to the pit." (v. 1-3)

God lifted David out of the depths, out of a mess, and He didn’t let his enemies gloat. He healed him and gave him another chance at life when he was at his lowest. As we continue reading the Psalm, we see how this reflection leads to pure praise! “You turned my wailing into dancing... clothed me with joy... I will praise you forever” (v. 11-12).

GO DEEP: Today, consider all that God has done and is doing in your life. Where did He bring you from? Where is He taking you? Write it down as a reminder for the future. Remember all that He has done, and spend some time praising Him.

BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
