Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
True Friends
How many friends do you have? Facebook accounts commonly claim hundreds of friendships. Have you ever described someone as a "Facebook friend"? The misconception is that at least 3⁄4 of the people on your friend list are not meaningful relationships. In most cases, a core group of friends can be counted on two hands or less. Think of who these friends are for you – the ones you would pick up the phone and call (not just text) to laugh, cry, celebrate, and pray with.
Studies have shown that those with 3-5 close friendships create more joy and satisfaction than the hundreds of "friends" on your social media account. It’s in this friend group that we find our belonging, our vulnerability, and our courage. Small groups are an important part of our mental health. They were important for Jesus and His disciples, and they are important for you.
In Psalm 35, David trusts God with those who have treated him unjustly. That can be hard to do. But he also shares how his true friends are there cheering him on. Let’s celebrate the true friends God has given us and leave the rest to God.
GO DEEP: What is your response when you or someone else has been wronged? What is your response when you or a friend experiences a win?
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
