Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
Lift Up Your Hands
You’re probably familiar with the typical scene in a movie where after a fight or battle, one side gives in and lifts up their hands. In many cultures, lifting up your hands is a sign of surrender. We see in this Psalm that as David cried out to the Lord and asked for help, he lifted his hands. Surrendering yourself to God’s will is to let go of the desire to control everything and trust wholeheartedly in the Father.
David’s heart leapt for joy as he recalled the wondrous things the Lord had done for him: The Lord was his strength and shield and helped him. David praised God with a song. Lifting up your hands can be a sign of humility, recognising that God is God and you are not. Be encouraged today that it is the Lord who is your strength. You don’t need to carry everything yourself. Recognise and declare that He is the fortress of your life. May this act of surrender lead to worship and praise today.
GO DEEP: Is there anything you've been trying to carry yourself lately? Maybe you find yourself feeling burdened by a heavy situation. Open your hands, let go and surrender those things to the Lord today. Put on a song and spend some time worshipping Him.
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
