There's Hope For Today

DAY 87 OF 366

The world that crucified Jesus was a barbaric world; a world wherein the life of a commoner held no value.

One born in a stable, the Romans concluded, could only be an animal. As the cross was raised and tamped into place it was just like a thousand other crucifixions on a thousand other hills. The mighty Roman Empire was just taking out its trash – nothing more, nothing less. Pilate was troubled, but surely his misgivings would fade with a good meal and a bit more wine. Herod was pleased with his legal and political maneuvering. They called him “the fox” with good reason. The Jewish leaders preserved their power and the illusion that they were the keepers of God’s law. Even as nature gathered herself to roar in defiance, this cold, dark world ridded itself of one: Jesus of Nazareth. What would it matter; one peasant Jew; a bit of dust in the wind? Yet today, the crucifixion will be remembered on every continent and in every nation.

On this chosen Friday, all of time looks back to a moment immediately forgotten by its executioners and forever remembered by its benefactors; the moment of ultimate grace.
