Abiding in the PsalmsSample
In this passage Paul is writing to the people of Philippi whilst he is in chains. Even in his situation, he is declaring to his audience to rejoice always in every situation. This is a remarkable statement given his own situation, but is a huge encouragement for us. Life is, unfortunately, not always sunshine and rainbows for us. It can be absolutely devastating, and it could be for any number of reasons — and sometimes all those reasons at once.
Yet, we are called to rejoice and not be anxious in every situation. How can this be? Well, it is through prayer and petition that we may rejoice in every situation. Prayer is not just something you do once in these situations. It is not a box that just needs to be ticked. No. We are called to pray with petition, to never give up, to be honest with God, and to wrestle with Him in these hard times. Paul tells us to present our requests to God, and that includes telling Him about how you feel about this season of life, telling Him what parts of the situation you want to change, and why. God will answer; it may not be how you expect or even what you want, but it is what is best for you because God can see the bigger picture.
There is a promise that the peace of God which transcends all understanding will be given to us. That peace is that God is in control of all situations. The joy we can have in all situations is because of what God has already done for us and is not dependent on current circumstances. Pray earnestly and honestly with God in every situation.
