Listening To The Word - 1 YearSample
Pride before a Fall
2 Chronicles 26:15-16, 21
“His fame spread far and wide for he was greatly helped until he became powerful. But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense…King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died.”
The seeds of our potential demise are found in the blessing which follows our obedience and faithfulness to the Lord. Once blessed, we can forget that it was God who blessed us (with salvation, with wealth, with influence) and we allow pride to blind us to overreaching or unfaithfulness. Pride is a much more dangerous condition than need or opposition. Pride makes God our enemy and prevents Him from warning us or us from listening to God. Uzziah’s fame and power spawned pride and led to unfaithfulness. However, God’s blessing could have also moved him to gratitude, worship and greater dependency on God.
How do we respond to God’s blessing?
Lord God, all I have comes from you. You are my source and my sufficiency. Thank you for your gifts and blessings. I repent for pride and not walking daily in gratitude and thankfulness for all you have given me.
