DAY 136 OF 365

Transfers of Authority

1 Kings 1:5, 32-35
“Now Adonijah…put himself forward and said, ‘I will be king’…King David said, ‘Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah…‘Take your Lord’s servants with you and set Solomon my son on my own mule…anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, “Long live King Solomon!”…he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.’”

Why was it important for David to appoint and anoint Solomon as king over Israel and Judah?

God had already spoken his selection of Solomon as David’s successor (1 Chronicles 28:5-6). Authority cannot be grasped and taken, but must be given and earned over time. Adonijah grasped for authority but it was illegitimate. David understood the need for waiting on the Lord for timing and confirmation of leadership in his own life. However, he failed to teach that same principle to his sons. Without submission to authority, we won’t walk in God’s authority. Once God gives us authority we are stewards of it. That authority does not belong to us, but to God. David made it clear that Solomon was being given his authority from both David, the leader of Israel, and from the Lord. These transfers of authority in God’s kingdom are rarely done well because we fail to understand God’s principles of authority.

Lord Jesus, I pray for grace and humility as I both submit to authority and exercise authority.
