Lent: With One Voice

DAY 17 OF 46

TELL JESUS

Have you ever been at the sea-front in a number 8 typhoon? The waves pound the shore and wind whips up the spray in blinding sheets. Lake Galilee frequently experiences, violent unpredictable storms. Waves as high as three metres have been recorded with wind gusts of over 70 kph. This storm overwhelms the disciples, experienced sailors, who’d spent their lives fishing the waters of Galilee yet who were fearful of drowning. In fact they didn’t actually ask Jesus to help – He was a carpenter not a sailor – they just shouted angrily at Him, ‘Don’t you care!?’ In the work-place a crisis can hit without warning. Suddenly we can find ourselves struggling to survive and facing professional failure.

We are often more reluctant to ask for help when facing a crisis in our own area of expertise. Yet, when we do tell Jesus, He is able to help us far beyond our expectations. Why wait until we’ve come to the end of our own abilities? Jesus is just a prayer away. He does care, cares deeply, and with His help we will not just survive but overcome.

FOR REFLECTION
• Have you ever asked the Lord to help you in your professional work? If not, what makes you reluctant to do so?
• Jesus does care about every aspect of your life including your work; why not tell Him about the work challenge you are facing right now?

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, Your power and authority can calm even the fiercest storm. Thank You that You care about what happens to me in my office. Forgive me for the times I’ve forgotten You until I’m desperate. Help me to seek Your guidance and help in all things.

About this Plan

Lent: With One Voice

A Lent devotional material created by the pastors of International Churches of Hong Kong, a guide for decisions, a vision of the future and a challenge to lifestyle. It is a subversive material that undermines contemporary assumptions and defies social norms. It is all of this because it is the Word of God as recorded by Mark and others, and therefore is about the transformation of people and communities.
