DAY 16 OF 46

SHINE LIKE A LAMP AND GROW LIKE A SEED.

In the Philippines, homes not reached by electricity use kerosene lamps during night-time. When I was a child we depended on lamps. We put the lamp where it could illumine the whole room. It would be difficult for us to work without light and would put us in danger as well. In the same way, God has given us light to illumine others, for them to know the truth and no longer live in darkness. Being a farmer’s son, I love planting seeds. It is so amazing that one seed planted would produce so many fruits and seeds when harvested. Words of God can be planted in our hearts and will multiply through sharing with others. The objects in these passages, are just ‘little things’ – light that illumines the whole house, seed that grows and multiplies. However, a tiny mustard seed when planted grows into a big tree. Sometimes, we see and think of ourselves as ‘little’ before God, but if we let Him use us to accomplish His will in our lives, then we could do bigger things.

FOR REFLECTION
• There are different kinds of lights (traffic lights, flashlights, spotlights, florescent lights, candle lights, lighthouse, torches, lamps) - which one best describes you? Why?
• Are there times when you think of yourself as ‘little’ and could not possibly do bigger things? ‘Little’ becomes bigger or much more as we place our abilities into the Master’s hand. Have you proved this in your life?

PRAYER
Father God, forgive me if there were times when I felt complacent, when I never desired to do bigger things because I felt so little. Thank You for reminding me that even little things can become big or much more if I let You work within me and through me. Let Your light shine upon me that I may able to shine in this world. In Jesus's mighty name, amen!

About this Plan

Lent: With One Voice

A Lent devotional material created by the pastors of International Churches of Hong Kong, a guide for decisions, a vision of the future and a challenge to lifestyle. It is a subversive material that undermines contemporary assumptions and defies social norms. It is all of this because it is the Word of God as recorded by Mark and others, and therefore is about the transformation of people and communities.
