DAY 22 OF 46

THE KING DEEPLY REGRETTED

Last 2012 there was much in the media about California’s former governor. This man’s indiscretions resulted in the damaging of his family, his health and his career. In an interview, his publicist stated that this man’s problem was not his infidelity but that he was an over sixty out-of-shape action star! It is within the challenges faced and choices made, that a man or woman’s character is revealed.

For all his power, King Herod is a weak man. When confronted with his adultery, he has regret but does not repent. Although he attempts to protect John from Herodias, Herod is too wretched and pitiful to defend anyone. His appetites rule his judgment and he is more concerned with his image than with doing what is right.

John, in contrast, was ‘a good and holy man.’ In defiance of a weak king and an angry queen, he confronted their sin.

FOR REFLECTION
• Do you truly repent of wrong or just regret mistakes?
• Which has greater influence over how you make choices – your desires or God’s Word?

PRAYER
Gracious Father, where my selfish motives and carnal desires have ruled my choices, forgive me. I recognize my need for repentance and not just to regret past mistakes. In all my decisions, let Your Word be my guide.

About this Plan

Lent: With One Voice

A Lent devotional material created by the pastors of International Churches of Hong Kong, a guide for decisions, a vision of the future and a challenge to lifestyle. It is a subversive material that undermines contemporary assumptions and defies social norms. It is all of this because it is the Word of God as recorded by Mark and others, and therefore is about the transformation of people and communities.
