The Lord is a Sun, our Needed Light.
Psalm 84 was written for people on pilgrimage. The people of Israel would travel from their homes to the temple in order to worship and be together in the presence of God. The journey was indeed long and took many days. As soon as the Sun went down, travelers had to stop and camp. It got cold, and they could not see the way, so they had to wait for the rising of the Sun to follow the road. The Sun was essential for them to know where to go and to keep them warm too. In the desert, the temperature drops significantly at night and it is necessary to light a fire to keep yourself warm. You could not continue your journey until dawn.
As Christians, we too are on a journey. We are journeying through teenage years, singlehood, marriage, or adulthood. Sometimes we face dark moments, and the world becomes such a dark place for us. We desperately need light; we need guidance. In Psalm 23, one of the most famous and quoted Psalms of the Bible, King David speaks of these feelings as like being in the darkest valley. A valley of the shadow of death, a place where there is no light. The road is not clear. So, what does the psalmist do in this situation?
First of all, the psalmist realizes that he is not alone – God is with him. Secondly, he holds on to what he is certain of. For example, in Psalm 119 it says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (119:105) God’s Word is the most certain, safest, and clearest ally when facing difficult times. Do you find yourself in a dark place today? Is your path unclear? God’s Word is the right place to go. God’s Word has the correct answer to every situation.
As pilgrims, we encounter dark places and valleys of shadow, but we are not alone. Moreover, we have this reassurance: two thousand years ago, the Light of the World came to Earth and took our place on the cross. That day, at noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the Sun stopped shining. Jesus paid the price of our reunion with the Father; the source of unlimited power shone His light to show us the way.
