God’s Grandeur

DAY 3 OF 7

The Path of Experimentation

When considering what truly gives meaning to our lives, we may find ourselves either on the path of discovery or one of experimentation with satisfaction. When you know that true satisfaction in life is found in Jesus Christ, then you are on the path of discovery. You may not have everything figured out, but you understand that Jesus is the reason for living and that ultimate satisfaction is found in Him. Now, what happens when that is not where you are? You are walking down the path of experimentation.

The path of experimentation is taken when you are still looking for something. This something can be spiritual or not. As teenagers, we usually look for approval or excitement. Single adults often crave accomplishment and companionship. If we already have that, we tend to look for stability and the blossoming of our loved ones. In adulthood, satisfaction may come from comfort, consistency, and convenience as top priorities.

Now, please remember that these are all good things. However, these things do not satisfy us completely. You may think that you would be truly satisfied if you could teach the Bible like that brother, if you could sing and worship like this worship leader, or if you had this one gift or this other. When we think like this, we are walking down the path of experimentation. We believe that once we check off the points on our list we will finally be satisfied. Unfortunately, we later realize that emptiness is still there and that satisfaction does not come from the outside, because it is a matter of the inside.

When you worship the wrong things, nothing else in life will come out quite right. But when you worship the only One who is truly capable of giving you real satisfaction, you will have a new sense of what really matters, and you will prioritize your life accordingly. I can promise you this: if you get off of the path of experimentation, you will find yourself saying the exact same words written by the psalmist, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” (Psalm 84:10)

Thought of the Day

When you stay on the path of discovery in Christ, true worship will flow out of your lips, and God’s kingdom will be your number one priority.
