DAY 354 OF 366

Become a Hermit?

Reading: Col.3:1-17

Key Verse: “Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of the God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” verses 1-2

If possessions, ambitions and relationships are such a problem what is the answer? Some have adopted the practice of becoming a hermit by excluding themselves from society in an attempt to live in isolation like the Amish. Others have given away their wealth to be free of its temptation and entrapment. But separating ourselves from society means we cannot be its salt and light by sharing Christ with our neighbours.

The Bible presents us with an alternative. The issue is not with wealth but with the focus of our thoughts based on our values. Jesus said, “seek first the kingdom of God”. Paul writes that we should set our focus “not on earthly things.” He particularly instructs us to “set your minds on things above”. The Passion Translation reads: “fill your thoughts with heavenly realities and not with the distractions of the natural realm”. The Living Bible says, “Let heaven fill your thoughts; don’t spend your time worrying about things down here”.

Jesus criticised people for thinking and worrying about daily necessities which God would provide. To “seek first the kingdom” is not to isolate yourself from the world but to prioritise God’s kingdom in the midst of the world.

Prayer: Father I choose to focus my thoughts on You and Your kingdom
