Acquisitions, Ambitions and Acquaintances
Reading: Luke 14:15-24
Key Verse: “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it.’ Please excuse me’” verse 18
One day Jesus was invited to eat with others at the house of a Pharisee. A guest likened the event to a feast in the kingdom of God. So Jesus taught another parable comparing the kingdom of God with a banquet to which many were invited.
Their excuses give us insight into their personal value systems. The first excused himself because he had just made an acquisition which was more important to him than attending the feast. The second wanted to try out some oxen. He longed to test them because he was ambitious that his new purchase would be awesome and achieve all he desired. Finally, one man had just married and excused himself from the once-in-a-lifetime invitation because he prioritised the new relationship (Luke 9:59-62, Matt.10:37-39).
These same influences can cause people to disregard the kingdom of God. We have seen how Jesus revealed preoccupation with food, fashion and the future prevented people experiencing God’s kingdom. Here, instead of seeking the kingdom first, the invited guests placed greater value on their acquisitions, ambitions and acquaintances. These things are important but they should never be allowed to become idols replacing God as first in our affections and decision making.
Prayer: Lord, You are first in my affections and I accept Your invitation to spend time with You
