What Was Jesus' Mission on Earth?

Jesus does not stay on earth

“I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” (John 16:28)

The Lord Jesus came to earth with a mission. When that mission is fulfilled, He returns to heaven. He doesn't stay on earth forever. And yet Jesus doesn't just leave. “I will see you again,” He promises His disciples.

When Jesus was killed, the disciples’ hopes failed. But Jesus came back from the realm of death. A short time later, He left His disciples again when He returned to His Father, as He had foretold. But one day, He will come back and renew this whole world. Then there will be no more separation, and the Lord Jesus will live forever on the new earth among men.

Until then, Jesus has given us His Holy Spirit as Comforter and Helper. So although He is not physically present on earth, He does not leave us alone.

For Jesus, it was perfectly clear where He was going. He was returning to his Father.

When you die or Jesus returns on earth, you too must leave this world. Are you confident that you will then go to your heavenly Father as well?

What Was Jesus' Mission on Earth?

Jesus Christ came to earth for a purpose. His coming was a conscious decision. During the years in which He traveled around the land of Israel and made God's Kingdom known, He also explained why He came to earth. Several times, we read in the Gospels: “I have come to...”. This reading plan aims to trace some of those statements to make us aware of Jesus’ mission.
