DAY 103 OF 365

Honey in the Battle

1 Samuel 14:24, 29
“…Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be any man who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!’ So none of the troops tasted food…Jonathan said, ‘My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey.’”

Jonathon was unaware of the oath to which Saul had bound his men, abstaining from food until he had avenged himself on his enemies. When Jonathan heard about it, he disagreed because it placed limitations on the health and strength of the troops, and it was outside of God’s guidance. However, Saul was determined to avenge himself of his enemies, enforced by his constraints and oath. This battle was not about the glory of God, it was about Saul. There are always casualties when we make the battle about ourselves. Honey was God’s provision and strength in the battle, but only Jonathon tasted it. The result of Saul’s way was the reckless slaughter and consumption of meat with blood in it by all the men. This was a clear violation of God’s instruction. When leaders make themselves the focus, they put their teams at risk, and rob God of his glory.

Lord Jesus, you alone are worthy. Keep me from rash statements or impulsive decisions. May your glory be my focus.
