In John 1:29-51 we get shown what it means to follow Jesus. John the baptist sees Jesus coming toward him and he immediately says. “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). John’s words are powerful: he’s not just talking about a person—he’s talking about the Savior who came to take away the sins of all humanity.

As high schoolers, we’re often faced with tons of decisions, pressures, and expectations from our friends, family, and society. It’s easy to get caught up in everything that demands our attention. But here’s the thing—Jesus’ invitation is simple and clear: follow Him. He’s the one who can truly bring peace, forgiveness, and purpose to our chaotic lives.

Let’s break this passage down into three different parts:

1. The Lamb of God (John 1:29-34)

He calls Him the Lamb of God, referring to the sacrifice Jesus would make for us on the cross. This is the ultimate act of love—Jesus gave His life so we could be forgiven.

For us, this is a reminder that no matter how many mistakes we make, Jesus is always there to forgive us. As a teen, you might feel like your mistakes define you, but the truth is, Jesus defines you. He calls you beloved, forgiven, and free when you choose to follow Him.

2. The Call to Follow (John 1:35-42)

In this portion of scripture, John’s disciples start following Jesus when they hear about Him. They simply ask, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” Jesus answers, “Come and you will see.” (John 1:39). Notice how Jesus doesn’t give them a complicated explanation or try to sell Himself—they just ask and He invites them in.

This invitation to come and see is still open to us today. We don’t have to have everything figured out or know all the answers. Jesus simply invites us to come close, to know Him better, and to walk with Him. The more we spend time with Jesus, the more we understand who He truly is.

3. Seeing the Bigger Picture (John 1:43-51)

When Philip tells Nathanael about Jesus, Nathanael is skeptical. But when he meets Jesus, Jesus reveals something about him that only God could know. Nathanael is blown away, and Jesus promises him that he will see even greater things.

Sometimes, we doubt whether God can use us, or if He’s really paying attention. But just like Nathanael, when we get close to Jesus, we start to see the bigger picture—God is working in our lives in ways we can’t fully understand yet. The more we follow Jesus, the more we’ll see how He’s working in us and around us.

Reflection questions:

Are you willing to see who Jesus really is without knowing all the answers?
