The Sword Of God’s Word

This is the only time in the Bible that the phrase ‘sword of the Spirit’ is used. The sword is a weapon of attack and defence. We have seen the moves, like in The Lord of the Rings trilogy or other dramas where swords are used, and the battles where the sword defends from blows of the enemy or is used to attack the enemy.

The sword spoken about by Paul is the Word of God. Hebrews 4:12 says, ‘For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.’

We need to know it, to use it effectively to defend against attacks, and to bring it to challenge others and any falsehoods and errors.

We are in a spiritual battle and knowing God’s Word stands us in a strong place and on firm ground. The purpose of the sword of the Spirit, the Bible, is to make us strong and able to withstand the evil onslaughts of the evil one, our enemy.

God’s Word is alive and sharp and can be used all the time. Read it, dig into it, reflect on it and we can be prepared for whatever comes our way. We need never be afraid or unprepared. The sword of the Spirit is with us.
