DEUTERONOMY 31-32:
Yesterday in Deuteronomy Moses reviewed the covenant and again stressed that the choice set before the people is between life and death, and between experiencing blessings or curses. Be aware that in the poem dictated to Moses by the Lord, the Lord spoke of things that were in Israel’s future as if they had already taken place. This is called proleptic past tense, and is a feature of prophetic writings.

PSALM 66:
I have always liked the beginning of today’s psalm, chapter 66, because it teaches that our glorious God deserves glorious praise. Note also that this psalm shows the importance of confessing our sins to God.

ACTS 18:
In our reading in Acts 17, opposition hounded the steps of Paul, Silas, and Timothy— first in Thessalonica and then in Berea. The people of Berea are an example for us all, and that’s why so many churches are named after their city. Then Paul in Athens debated with the philosophers of his day.

Oh Lord our God, it is right that the whole world would stand in awe of the great things that You have done. Your deeds bring shouts of joy from one end of the earth to the other. We praise You that people all over the world and across the distant seas trust in You. You give us victory and You do wonderful things to save us. Wonderful, wonderful things to save us! Happy are those whom you choose, whom you bring to live in your sanctuary. We will be satisfied with the good things of your house and the blessings of your sacred temple. All people come to You on account of their sins. Our faults defeat us, but You forgive them. It is You, oh Lord, that have placed in our hearts, and our minds, our very nature, a recognition of right and wrong, of justice and what should be done. This is not something that would happen if we were simply blobs of protoplasm that had evolved in some odd way. No, You created us, and You put within our being this recognition of right and wrong. That brings us to You. And it is to this fact of your being our creator that Paul returned— as he spoke on the hill of Areopogus. He spoke of You saying, “God has overlooked the times when people did not know Him. But now he commands all of them everywhere to turn away from their sins, for He has fixed a day in which He will judge the whole world with justice, by means of the Man he has chosen. And He has given proof of this to everyone by raising that man, Jesus, from death.” Lord, we thank you for these two things: One, that You are our creator, and secondly, that You gave us solid proof of what You want to do through the resurrection of your son Christ Jesus. So it is right for us to praise you and to keep our promises to you, because you answer prayers. And so now we will present other prayers to you. Please be with us today, and we thank you for answering our prayers.
