Horizon Church December Bible Reading Plan - Christmas Advent: Jesus, Come

DAY 1 OF 31

The First Sunday of Advent

Welcome to the Advent season!

Wherever you are this December, whatever your circumstances, we hope that you will set aside time each day this month to open God’s Word. We will share short devotionals to help you reflect on the day’s reading.

For centuries, God's people waited in anticipation of deliverance. From the earliest moments in Genesis, humanity’s need for restoration was clear. The stories throughout the Old Testament reflect this longing, as patriarchs, prophets, and kings looked forward to the day when God’s promise of a Saviour would be fulfilled.

In Luke’s account of Simeon, we see a man who had waited his whole life to see the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, Simeon recognised Him immediately, declaring, “My eyes have seen Your Salvation.” Simeon saw in that child the fulfilment of every promise—a Saviour not only for Israel but for all people.

Today, we, too, live in a world that cries out for hope, for rescue, and for peace. Advent is a time to remember that this longing has been answered in Christ. Jesus came to fulfil God’s promises, bringing salvation to all who believe. He is the promised Saviour who meets our deepest needs and fills our emptiest places.

As we begin this Advent season, let us renew our hope in Him. God has not left us alone. In Jesus, we have the answer to every question and the fulfillment of every promise. May our hearts be filled with gratitude as we prepare to celebrate the birth of the One who came to redeem us and draw all nations to Himself.
