Unhealthy Personality Traits

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
2 Timothy 1:7

I know we all wish we’d done better or known better years earlier, but the truth is, we can’t turn back the hands of time. We can either move forward toward healing from our past or remain stuck in the pit. Or maybe it’s the lion’s den.

One of the keys to moving forward is in Relationships. In addition to being watchful of ourselves, we must also be aware of others with destructive personality types that will easily derail our progress. There are five basic personality types that seem to always end up in relational conflict and failure.

  1. Peace at any price – these people will do anything to avoid conflict, disappointing others, or having to say no.
  2. Jezebel – just like the woman in the Bible, these people are manipulative and controlling.
  3. Avoider – They are masters at the stiff arm. No one gets in, and everyone remains on a surface level as far as relationships go
  4. Cold as ice – They appear to not need feelings or human contact. How they feel is not a factor in life, but what they achieve is.
  5. Performer – They are always on a stage. Most were raised by parents who manipulated love and attention, so they learned to perform for their attention.

Please, if you see one or a combination of these personality types in yourself, you’ve got to move towards recovery and restoration. These really are destructive types, and they not only hurt you but harm so many others.

Breaking free from your past involves recognition. But it’s the willingness to re-tool ourselves in God’s image so that we are able to pursue sincere relationships, that lead to lasting freedom.
