Living for What Lasts
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16 (ESV)
It’s easy to live as if this life is all there is. Our schedules, decisions, and priorities often reflect a focus on the here and now—what we can see, feel, and control. But John 3 reminds us of a far greater reality: eternity is real, and the choices we make now echo forever.
Jesus told Nicodemus that we must be “born again” to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). This new birth doesn’t just prepare us for eternity—it changes how we live today. Eternal life is not just a future promise; it’s a present gift. It’s the very life of God placed within us through faith in Jesus. This life has no death, no darkness, no defeat—only fullness, peace, and joy in God’s presence.
Still, many live with no thought of eternity. They chase success, comfort, or pleasure, thinking that this is all there is. But when we live without an eternal mindset, we shrink our lives down to the size of our circumstances. We worry more, strive harder, and settle for far less than God intends. The truth is, this life is not the main event—it’s just the beginning.
John 3:16 is more than a memory verse—it’s the heart of the gospel. To “believe” in Jesus is not just to agree that He exists, but to fully trust Him—to let Him lead, to surrender our plans, and to depend on Him for salvation and transformation. This kind of belief changes everything.
If eternity is real—and it is—then we must start living like it. That means forgiving when it’s hard, giving when it costs us, and sharing Jesus with others because their eternity matters too. It means measuring success not by comfort or status, but by faithfulness to God.
Respond to God’s Word:
Take time today to reflect on how much of your life is lived with eternity in mind. In your journal or prayer time, ask God to shift your perspective. Write down one area—your time, your money, your goals—where you can start living with eternity in view. Let the promise of John 3:16 guide you into a life that lasts beyond this world.
