Let Jesus Do It His Way
“His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’” — John 2:5 (ESV)
The wedding at Cana was a joyful celebration—until the wine ran out. In that culture, this was more than a minor inconvenience; it was a major social failure. Hospitality was sacred, and not having enough wine could bring shame on the entire family. Mary saw the problem and turned to the one person she knew could help—her son, Jesus.
Mary didn’t demand a specific solution. She didn’t tell Jesus how to fix it. She simply said, “They have no wine,” and trusted Him with the rest. Even when Jesus gave her a puzzling response, she didn’t argue. Instead, she turned to the servants and said something powerful: “Do whatever he tells you.” That’s the heart of trust—believing that Jesus knows best, even when we don’t understand what He’s doing.
Sometimes we bring our problems to Jesus with our own solutions already in mind. We might say, “Lord, here’s the issue—and here’s how I’d like You to fix it.” But Jesus rarely works according to our plans. His ways are higher, wiser, and more purposeful. Like Mary, we must learn to surrender—not only the problem, but the process. Letting Jesus work His way means trusting that His timing and methods are better than ours.
What Jesus did next was unexpected. He didn’t rush out to buy more wine. He told the servants to fill jars with water. It seemed unrelated to the issue, but they obeyed—and the water became wine. Jesus not only provided a solution, but He also gave the best wine last. When we allow Him to move in His own way, He often does far more than we could ask or imagine.
Is there something in your life that you’re asking Jesus to fix—your way? Maybe He’s asking you to wait, to trust, or to obey in a way that doesn’t make sense. Like Mary, you can say, “Do whatever He tells you.”
Respond to God’s Word:
Bring your situation to Jesus, but let go of your plan. In prayer or in your journal, ask Him to help you trust His way of working, even when it’s different from your own. Surrender the outcome to Him. He’s not just able to fix things—He knows the best way to do it.
