Day 5: Good Friday
Read John 19:16–30
If you have time today, I encourage you to read the highlighted text at least twice.
The crucifixion is not an easy passage to sit with. The brutality and anguish Jesus endured are hard to comprehend, let alone digest. But during this sacred season, engaging deeply with this part of Scripture is vital. It allows us to fully grasp the weight of what Jesus did for us.
If the cross is a sign of anything, it is a sign of the overwhelming, unrelenting love Jesus has for you.
Take some time today to meditate on His suffering - not just the physical pain, but the emotional and spiritual burden He bore. Reflect on it through the lens of His great love for you, a love so vast it drove Him to the cross.
Let these questions guide your reflection:
- How does Jesus’ sacrifice change the way you think about sin? About grace?
- Can you truly fathom that His suffering paid the penalty for your sins, freeing you from the punishment you deserved?
Consider this astounding truth: grace is free.
You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to strive for it. All you need to do is believe in Jesus, receive His sacrifice, and confess Him as Lord.
But while receiving grace is free, walking with Jesus costs everything.
Following Him means laying down your preferences, your desires, and your ways in favour of His higher, better ways. It’s not easy. It’s not cheap. But, oh, it’s worth it.
Knowing Jesus transforms everything. It shifts how we see the world, how we treat others, and how we understand ourselves. It calls us into a life of surrender, but also a life filled with hope, joy, and purpose.
Today, my prayer for you is this:
May you grasp even a glimpse of the height, depth, width, and breadth of God’s love for you. And may that awareness lead you to worship Him with all that you are.
The cross is not the end of the story - it’s the beginning of life, eternal and abundant, with the One who loves you more than you can imagine.
Father God,
Thank you for your perfect ways. Jesus, thank You for enduring the cross for my sake. I may never fully grasp the depth of what you suffered nor the love you have for me but please help me to live a life worthy of your love and your sacrifice.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
