What Does Jesus Offer?Sample

The Light of the World
Welcome to Day 2! Today, we’ll explore Jesus’s declaration, “I am the light of the world,” This powerful metaphor reveals Jesus as the light that disperses darkness, brings clarity, and offers a way to live in connection with God. Just as light helps us navigate in the physical world, Jesus claims to illuminate the deeper truths about life, purpose, and God.
Remember, here’s how you can structure your time doing the plan together with a friend:
- Read: Take turns reading the passages with a friend or on your own.
- Retell: Summarise the story in your own words, recalling the details.
- Reflect: Share what stood out to you. What insights do these stories offer about Jesus and the people involved?
- Relate: Discuss how these stories might connect to your life or challenge your perceptions. Use the Reflection Questions to prompt your discussion
In scripture, light represents clarity, life, and truth, while darkness symbolizes confusion, selfishness, and separation from God. Jesus doesn’t just claim to know the light—He claims to be the Light that reveals what holds us back from true life and calls us to something greater.
The passages from John highlight a tension between light and darkness. Some people embrace the light and allow it to transform them, while others resist it, choosing to remain in darkness. This struggle isn’t just a first-century issue—it’s still true today.
We see darkness all around us—in conflict, injustice, personal struggles, and even in our own hearts. Many search for hope in politics, success, relationships, or self-improvement, but these things only go so far. Despite progress, the world still wrestles with issues that human effort alone cannot fully resolve.
Jesus offers a different solution: Himself. He doesn’t just expose darkness—He brings renewal, healing, and direction. His light isn’t about judgment but transformation—empowering us to reflect His goodness and be part of His work in the world.
Through this claim, Jesus challenges us to consider where we place our hope and how we respond to the darkness in ourselves and around us. By following the Light, we can experience God’s presence and life as it was meant to be.
Reflection Questions
- What do you think it means to "walk in darkness"? Can you think of areas in your life or the world where confusion, fear, or brokenness seem to dominate?
- Think about how light works—it reveals what’s hidden, gives direction, and provides security. How do you think this connects to what Jesus offers?
- If Jesus’s claim to be “the light of the world” is true, what difference would it make in your life?
Reflect on and discuss these questions, and join us tomorrow for Day 3!
