The Promise of Grace

The word grace is mentioned 170 times in the Bible, which points to its significance. God’s grace for us, derived from the Greek word charis (khar’-ece), reveals God's unmerited favor, love, and help. In the Hebrew language, grace is expressed as chên (khane), which carries the same essence as charis while adding the benefits of being pleasant, precious, and favored.

In the New Testament, greeting someone with grace and peace is a beautiful blessing, as seen in Philippians 1:2, where the greeting in Paul’s letter to the church starts by saying, “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Grace goes beyond mere unmerited favor; it embodies a profound relationship between the giver of gifts (the Father) and the grateful recipients (us).

Always remember that you are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, Ephesians 2:8-9. Through the incredible gift of grace, every sin is completely washed away, permanently, by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The crucial but simple truth is that nothing we’ve done or could ever do can earn this precious gift.

Through God’s promise of grace, you have been forgiven of every sin—past, present, and future. Christ suffered and died once for all our sin and as the Spirit raised Him back to life, we are raised to a new life with Him (1 Peter 3:18). His grace gifts us with the promise of eternal life (1 John 2:25). And what is eternal life? John 17:3 answers this by telling us that it is knowing the Father and Jesus Christ, Who He sent.

Reflection: Grace, favor, and joy all share the same Greek root word, Chairō (khah ‘ee-ro). With the promise of grace comes the promise of favor and joy. Whenever you need favor or joy, remember that it has already been given to you through the promise of the Father’s grace. May grace and peace be with you in Jesus’ Name.
