Sermon on the Mount: The BeatitudesSample
Day 6:
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. - Matthew 5:4
Receiving God’s comfort
Mourning invites us to experience God’s presence uniquely. When we face grief—whether due to personal loss, sorrow over sin, or compassion for the brokenness in our world—God promises to draw near. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” In our times of mourning, God doesn’t stand at a distance; He comes close, offering His comfort and strength.
Receiving God’s comfort is an act of surrender, letting go of our need to “fix” everything ourselves and allowing God to meet us in our vulnerability. His comfort is not always about removing our pain but assuring us of His presence in the midst of it. God’s comfort can bring peace to our hearts and minds, even when circumstances are still complicated. Through mourning, we are reminded that we are not alone; God walks with us, bearing our grief and lifting our burdens.
God’s comfort often arrives through His Spirit, who ministers to us as the “Comforter.” - John 14:26. This gentle presence offers strength and healing beyond what we can understand. Sometimes, God’s comfort is felt through Scripture, which renews our hope and points us back to His promises. Other times, it comes through people—friends or family who listen, pray, and sit with us in our pain. However it arrives, God’s comfort assures us that He sees us, understands our sorrow, and will sustain us.
Mourning is not something we experience in isolation; it’s a place where we discover a deeper intimacy with God. His comfort helps transform our sorrow into resilience and faith, shaping us into people who can trust Him even through the darkest valleys. And as we receive His comfort, we are also equipped to comfort others who mourn, extending to them the compassion God has shown us.
Prayer Focus:
Ask God to make His comfort real to you, giving you strength, peace, and hope.

About this Plan
The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most incredible passages of scripture in the entire Bible. It is the longest passage of Jesus speaking without interruption. The Beatitudes, or attitudes of supreme blessing, are a roadmap for our lives, teaching us to reflect the nature of Jesus Christ in every interaction. Throughout this devotional, we will spend three days on each beatitude, ending with a focus on applying the entirety of it to our daily lives.
