The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a YearSample
Week 48. Day 2. Mark 4-7.
Mark 4 has many parables, with the first one—the parable of the sower—explaining why Jesus taught this way. Parables reveal the mystery of the kingdom of God, but they do so in way that also reveals the hearts of the hearers. How we listen (a key word in this section) is vital.
4:1-34 What do each of the different parables teach about the nature of the kingdom of God?
Are there any common themes to all of them?
4:35-5:43 Four miracles. What do these teach about
- Jesus’s identity?
- The nature of the kingdom?
Ch 6 Feeding of the 5000. Picture the scene if you can. How would people have been responding do you think?
The feeding of the 5000 is one of many Moses/Exodus allusions in Mark’s gospel, pointing to Jesus as the one who will bring about the new Exodus, as prophesied in Isaiah.
7:24 Jesus travels into Gentile (non-Jewish) areas for the first time. Jesus performs exactly the same types of miracles there as he did in Jewish areas (7:24-8:10).
Why do you think this might be?
For reflection: What here amazes you about Jesus?
NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
About this Plan
The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
