The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a YearSample
Week 48. Day 1. Mark 1-3.
Introduction to Mark's gospel.
Mark is a fast-paced and breathless read. The narrative races along, and the Jesus we meet is larger than life, pulsing with energy. People are consistently amazed at him, and when we read Mark, we can see why! Even if you are familiar with Jesus and the gospel, try to recapture something of this amazement as you read some bigger sections.
One very simple and helpful way to read Mark is to ask three questions:
- Who is Jesus?
- Why did he come?
- What does it mean to follow him?
These questions are drawn from the central section of Mark (8:27-38) which forms the turning point in the book.
One further question we can ask each day as we read Mark is this: What here amazes you about Jesus?
Mark 1-3
Mark 1:1-13 Introduction
1:1 ‘Christ’ or ‘Messiah’ means promised king (from the Old Testament)
1:2 Mark begins by telling us that that Jesus is fulfilling the gospel promises of Isaiah 40 onwards.
Bonus: read Is 40:3-11
- Who is ‘the way’ being prepared for?
- What is the ‘good news’ in Is 40:9ff?
- How does this enrich our understanding of what is happening in Mark 1?
Mark 1:14-3:45 Early ministry
1:14-15 Key verses introducing Mark’s gospel
In what areas does Jesus show his authority (key word in Mark) in this section?
What do we learn of Jesus’s priorities?
Mark 3:6 is the end of a mini-section, with opposition starting to build against Jesus.
Note 3:7 Jesus’s fame has spread to surrounding nations by now (c.f. Is 42:6)
NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.
