The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

DAY 332 OF 365

Week 48. Day 3. Mark 8-10.

8:27-38 Is the central theological section of Mark, and the turning point in the gospel. 3 questions come to prominence:

  1. Who is Jesus?
  2. Why has he come? (i.e. what sort of Messiah is he?)
  3. What does it mean to follow him?

Question 1 sums up Mark 1-8. Questions 2 and 3 will be the main focus of Mark 9-16.

9:30-32 Jesus’ second prediction of his death.

How does what follows (up to end of chapter) show that the disciples have not yet understood what sort of Messiah Jesus will be?

Ch 10 Why do you think Mark puts the story of the children next to the story of the rich young man?

10:32-45 Third prediction of Jesus’s death. How is the disciples’ response still wrong? Why?

For Reflection: Note the healing of blindness at the beginning and end of this section. It takes God opening eyes for us to see what sort of Messiah Jesus will be, and what discipleship will be like.

  • What sort of God / Messiah do people naturally want?
  • What sort of discipleship do people naturally want?

What here amazes you about Jesus?

NOTE: Days 1-5 of each week contain the scripture reading for that week. Day 6 has just the 'key chapters'. If you want a briefer version of this plan that still takes you through the whole Bible, you could just read the key chapters featured on day 6. Day 7 has the podcast video where we discuss the week's reading.

About this Plan

The Bible OverBrew - Bible in a Year

The Bible OverBrew is a friendly virtual book group, helping you read the Bible in big chunks, preferably with a mug of tea! Maybe you've tried to read through the Bible before, but gave up when it felt confusing or too intense? We are here to help you! We provide notes and questions to guide your reading, and note ‘key chapters’ if you don’t have time to read it all. In our podcast at the end of each week we draw out the key themes, and how it all points to Christ. We’d love you to join us!
