The Old Testament in 10 DaysSample
As The Bible Recap helped us see, Israel is going into exile in Babylon. But, God has not given up on his promise. God will still provide a king to sit on his throne and a priest to bring his people back. This king and priest is Jesus. Jesus fulfills all the promises made to God’s people. Though our sin has exiled us from a home with God, Jesus is our king and priest who brings us back.
You can now continue to today’s reading where you will hear Jeremiah’s prophecy of destruction and promise of restoration. When you’re ready, the next day in the plan will return us to a familiar guide who will walk you through the next part the story—how to wait in exile. Remember to visit the publisher page of this plan to explore more from the ministry partners and Bible guides being featured throughout this plan.
God’s Voice
Welcome back to “The Old Testament in 10 Days.” We are exploring the overarching story of the Old Testament while introducing you to trusted guides who are here to help you understand and love the Bible. Last time, Streetlights helped us meditate on God’s promise to King David. God would make one of David’s descendants the king of his eternal kingdom. Through a son of David, God’s rule and reign would not only come to Israel, but the whole world.
However, before this came true, the kingdom in Israel falls. God was patient with Israel through centuries of evil, hypocrisy, idolatry, and injustice. God’s kingdom was supposed to be his image to the nations, but now they looked just like the rest of the broken world. So, God would make good on another promise he made to Israel. As Israel drove the evil nations out of God’s promised land, Israel herself would be driven out of the land by Babylon.
This punishment didn’t come out of nowhere. God had been speaking to his people and his kings the whole time through prophets. Prophets communicate God’s Word to God’s people. Prophet after prophet called out the injustices and warned Israel of their coming destruction. But, they did not heed the warnings. So, Israel would be taken out of the promised land by Babylon.
To help us see how God is true to his promises to rid his kingdom of evil but never give up on building it, let’s revisit The Bible Recap. The Bible Recap is a daily podcast that helps Bible Readers like you read, understand, and love Scripture. In this episode, you will hear how one of Israel’s prophets, Jeremiah, both warned Israel of its coming destruction and promised its eventual restoration. Watch this.
