The Old Testament in 10 DaysSample
God’s Home
Welcome back to “The Old Testament in 10 Days.” We are exploring the overarching story of the Old Testament while introducing you to trusted guides who are here to help you understand and love the Bible. Last time, BibleProject helped us see how God has always planned to live with his people. Starting in the Garden of Eden and reestablished in the tabernacle, God is committed to making a home with humanity. But a tent in the wilderness where Israel was after being freed from Egypt was no home. The need for a homeland leads us to the next part of the story.
God promised Israel’s forefather, Abraham, that his descendants would live in a land called Canaan. God promised that Israel would live in this land and show his image to the world by how they lived. But, the land of Canaan was now overrun by nations who opposed God and filled the land with evil. To create a homeland for God’s people and presence, God would first have to deal with these wicked nations.
To help us enter into this crucial and difficult part of Israel’s history, let’s reconnect with our friends at Spoken Gospel. Spoken Gospel is on a mission to help you read the Bible the way Jesus taught us to read it — seeing how every single part of it is about him. Today, you will see how even the conquest of Canaan described in the book of Joshua is all about Jesus. Watch this.
As Spoken Gospel’s introduction to the book of Joshua helps us see, God desires to create a good world where humans can live with him. For this to happen, evil has to be driven out. In Joshua, ridding the land of evil happened through conquest. In Jesus, it happens through the spreading of the Gospel and acts of love.
You can now continue to today’s reading where you will read about Israel’s first battle in Canaan at Jericho. When you’re ready, the next day in the plan will return us to a familiar guide who will walk you through the next part the story—how God builds a kingdom on the Earth.
