The Old Testament in 10 DaysSample
God’s King
Welcome back to “The Old Testament in 10 Days.” We are exploring the overarching story of the Old Testament while introducing you to ministry partners who are here to help you understand and love the Bible. Last time, Spoken Gospel helped us see how God desires to create a homeland where he can live with humanity like he did in the Garden of Eden. He would do this through Israel: a chosen people living under God’s chosen law in a chosen place. Another word for a people, under a law, in a place, is a country, nation, or—to use an important word from Scripture—a kingdom.
The Kingdom of God is his presence and purpose working itself in and throughout the world. And, like all kingdoms, God’s kingdom needed a king. Israel’s most famous king is named David. He was a man after God’s own heart and was committed to bringing God’s rule and reign to Earth in Israel. Like God chose Israel to be his kingdom, God chose David to be his king. God promised that one of David’s descendants would sit on his kingdom’s throne forever, bringing God’s rule and reign to the whole world.
To help us meditate on this promise, let’s revisit our friends at Streetlights. Streetlights exists to unfold the Gospel in God’s Word through creative communication so all can understand. Today, their audio Bible will unfold God’s Word to you in 2 Samuel 7 where God makes his promise to David. Listen to this.
As we heard with the help of Streetlights, God made an eternal promise to David. One of his descendants would reign from his throne forever. This eternal king is none other than Jesus. Jesus is a descendant of king David. So, when Jesus said, “the Kingdom of Heaven is here,” he meant that the King of God’s kingdom was here. Jesus brings God’s rule and reign to the whole earth by leading his people to follow his commands in every nation on earth.
You can now continue to today’s reading where you can slow down and meditate on the passage we just listened to. Find what sticks out to you about God’s promise to David and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you about it. When you’re ready, the next day in the plan will return us to a familiar guide who will walk you through the next part the story—how God speaks to the people in his kingdom.
