Holy Spirit, Hold My HandSample
Holy Spirit, Who Is He?
Who is the Holy Spirit? Many Christians are more familiar with God the Father and God the Son but find the Holy Spirit somewhat mysterious. Remember when Jesus said that unless He departed, the Holy Spirit would not come? The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost ushered in a new era in human history, initiated by Jesus' Victory (John 7:39)—His Death and Resurrection.
The Work of the Holy Spirit did not just start in the New Testament era; we also see His Works in the Old Testament. In the Creation Story of Genesis 1:2, the Holy Spirit, along with God the Father and the Son (the Word), participated in the Creation. He was described as a Mighty Wind hovering over the waters. The word ‘hovering’ in the original Hebrew could be likened to a hen brooding over her eggs. From the beginning, He was involved in Creation and human life.
In the Old Testament, we find many whom God chose to receive the Holy Spirit, albeit temporarily. The Holy Spirit would come and go. For example, Samson received extraordinary physical strength, but when the Spirit of God left him, his strength also waned. Hence, David also cried out, "...take not thy Holy Spirit from me" (Psalm 51:11).
In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is revealed more clearly and prominently, for instance, in the events related to the Birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:35, 41, 67-68; 2:27). The Holy Spirit as the Third Person of the Holy Trinity was vividly portrayed at the Baptism of Lord Jesus. God the Father expressed that He was well pleased with Jesus, who was being baptized, and the Holy Spirit descended from Heaven upon Him like a dove.
Jesus also emphasized the role of the Holy Spirit, who would become another Helper (just like Jesus) after His departure. He also reminded us of the Holy Spirit's Eternal Nature, who would be with us forever, unlike in the Old Testament. John 14:16 says, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever.”
The Holy Spirit is not "some thing" or impersonal force or power. He is a Personal God who is close to us and loves us deeply.
Would you take a moment now and open your heart and mind to the Presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives? Discover the joy of walking with Him as He fills our hearts with the Boundless Love of God.
