Holy Spirit, Hold My Hand

DAY 10 OF 10

Misconceptions About the Holy Spirit

Many Christians are not familiar with the Holy Spirit. I often encounter many who are even afraid of the Holy Spirit. Here are some common misconceptions I've come across.

1. Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

Many people I meet (myself included in the past) fear the Holy Spirit because of this verse in Matthew 12:31, which says that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. When we hear "will not be forgiven," we immediately envision punishment and the terrifying fires of hell. Unknowingly, in our imaginations, the Holy Spirit appears like a petty, easily offended, and angry God.

It's truly sad. I have wasted so much time in my life on this misunderstanding.

The context of the above story is about the Jewish people who rejected Jesus. The Holy Spirit enables someone to believe in the Lord Jesus and receive Salvation and forgiveness through His Work of Death and Resurrection. Someone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit is essentially one who rejects Jesus, thus he does not have the access to the forgiveness for his sins.

This understanding is consistent with the overall context of the book of Hebrews, where the author reminds the Hebrews that the rules of the Law of Moses they had are shadows of the Perfect Redemption in Jesus Christ. So, if they reject Jesus, there is no other way because Jesus is the only way to Salvation.

2. The Misconception that the Holy Spirit Makes Us Feel Guilty and Condemned

Another frequently misinterpreted verse is in John 16:8-11 (MSG): ' When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.

People often say, see, the Holy Spirit makes us feel guilty and accuses us of our sins.

Think about it: is life in the Spirit supposed to be a life of condemnation?

Let's read that verse carefully. First, the verse talks to the world, not us - He will convict the world.

The world!

Not us, remember!

If we consider the context, it specifically discusses the Holy Spirit's Work in bringing the world to repentance, not His Work in our lives as children of God.

So, the Holy Spirit does not accuse us to make us feel guilty; instead, He frees us from guilt and reminds us that we are the Righteousness of God in Christ (2 Cor 5:21).

3. Is the Holy Spirit Scary?

Absolutely not!

The Holy Spirit is a Gentle, Loving Friend who always encourages you. Here are some verses to replace your unhealthy fear of the Holy Spirit with the truth about Him:

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father (Romans 8:15, NKJV).

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Tim 1:7, NKJV).

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:26-27, NKJV).

And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love (Romans 5:5, NLT).

Imagining the Holy Spirit as an angry and scary figure is a tragic misconception. It would be a pity if we missed the opportunity in our lifetime on Earth to enjoy His Presence alongside the Loving Triune God.

May our heart whisper to Him, “Hold my hand, Holy Spirit.”

About this Plan

Holy Spirit, Hold My Hand

Who is the Holy Spirit? Many Christians are more familiar with God the Father and God the Son but find the Holy Spirit somewhat mysterious. Jesus said that unless He departed, the Holy Spirit would not come. He is our Helper, Comforter, and Advocate - our Best Friend. In this 10-day Plan, we'll learn about the Holy Spirit and that He is your closest Friend.
