The Gospel of MarkSample
Jesus had traveled to these Gentile nations, a people group that had been viewed as separate
from God. So in the conversation with this Gentile woman, we see Jesus highlights the
position of her as a Gentile woman. Initially hearing this can seem very harsh, but Jesus was
highlighting her position culturally, more than a personal view of her worth. The beauty in this
story is the faith and humility in her response. She does not take offense and asks Him to help
her in her lowly level. She therefore received from Jesus.
It is so important that we see the power of coming to God just as we are and allowing Him to
make His promises true to those who are weak and unclean.
“Clarke praised the prayer of this woman and showed it had nine notable features: “1. It is short;
2. humble; 3. full of faith; 4. fervent; 5. modest; 6. respectful; 7. rational; 8. relying only on the
mercy of God; 9. persevering.” (Enduring Word Commentary)
