The religious leaders questioned Jesus’ authority to forgive sins because they knew only God could forgive sins. And they were correct: only God can forgive sins. They did not realize, though, that God the Son stood before them acting on God’s authority — as God in the flesh — forgiving the paralytic’s sins. Jesus first took care of the man’s deeper need — the forgiveness of his sins. Then, to prove His authority to forgive sins, He also healed the man.

Jesus does not always heal our physical ailments, but when we ask Him, He always forgives our sins. This opens the door for a personal relationship with the God of the universe. We can talk to Him about anything and everything and expect to receive mercy and grace.

● Ask the Holy Spirit to show you any unconfessed sins in your life. Confess them and remember that Jesus promises to forgive them.
