Two Kingdoms - Part 1Sample
The Unseen
Today is all about the unseen, the things done in secret, and issues of the heart. Let’s be honest - we all enjoy receiving praise, affirmation, and rewards for our efforts. Things that people notice. We are concerned with our appearance and how others see us. The kingdom of God, however, is all about the deep things. Your Father in Heaven wants to deal with the things inside. He is committed to you becoming more like Jesus, and He sees everything!
In the verses we will read today, Jesus gives many examples of how not to do it. He exposes the hypocrites - the people that only do good to others to be seen and rewarded. For them, it has more to do with pride and appearance than a pure and righteous desire to help and love others. Outward religiosity reveals the condition of the heart. Those that pray and fast and do good deeds for the approval of man are doing those things for themselves, to feel good and to look righteous. Inside though, their hearts are far from God. How is your heart today?
When we realise what is going on within is more important, we begin living like kingdom people. We could say we live inside out! Remember - God sees everything! He will be faithful to reward you for your good deeds. Living to please the Father is essential to growing deeper in relationship with Him. How would your life change if you believed and reminded yourself that your Father sees everything? Every thought, good or bad, every action done in secret, every word you speak.
In this chapter, we see the recipe for prayer. Again, it’s all about the unseen, the things done in private. “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen…” Matthew 6:6
Go deep: How is your heart today? Have you been focusing too much on outward things or appearances to gain the acceptance or approval of others? Remember that your Father in heaven defines your identity and that He loves you so much.
Be bold: Take a moment to think about those people that may have annoyed you or even hurt you this week. How did you react? What were your thoughts? How can you be bold and bless those people? See how your heart changes as you seek to bless them.
Memorise it: “…your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:18b
