Good News

Two kingdoms - light and darkness. Did you know that you were made to shine in this world and reflect the kingdom of God wherever you go? The kingdom of God is good news. Better than that, it’s great news! It’s healing for the sick, peace for those in distress, and joy for those that mourn. Over the next seven days, we’re going to discover what it means to be a part of two kingdoms; living in the empire (the world) and at the same time living out the values of the kingdom of God and being a blessing to those around you.

Today we begin at the start of Jesus’ ministry. For many, Jesus’ arrival and message turned their world upside down! They left everything behind and followed him. Jesus breaks into history with a radical message - good news for everyone! Good news for the poor and the outsider. Good news for the sick and the hurting. Those rejected by society find acceptance and love in the person of Jesus. What an amazing king we have!

The kingdom of God is often called the “upside down kingdom.” In the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-11), there is blessing and promise to be found in the characteristics that the world might view as “weak.” God’s value system is completely different! Blessed are the poor in spirit, the pure, the humble… These are characteristics of kingdom people. There is a blessing in unexpected places, but it will require seeing the world through different lenses. Though we live in the empire, a world that is not truly our home, we are called to live like Jesus and reflect him in our daily lives. We may experience many challenges living in the empire; sickness, suffering, and persecution, but the kingdom of Jesus is hope. The kingdom of Jesus will never end.

Go deep: What does it mean to let your light shine before others? Are you boldly living out the kingdom of God, or do you tend to hide away?

Be bold: Who could you share this with today? Who needs to hear this? Perhaps somebody close to you has never had the opportunity to hear about the Good News. Dare to be bold today!
