Abraham must have been overwhelmed by this promise from God. Having been childless for years and suddenly being told that the generations that would come after him would outnumber all of the stars in the sky? It must have felt inconceivable! However, his faith helped him believe this promise would be true. The faith that Abraham showed here is something that would be passed down for thousands of years, from generation to generation, just as was promised. And while Scripture shows us that Abraham wasn’t perfect, throughout his life he did prove himself to be a faithful follower of God. And ultimately, that faithfulness was rewarded.

What are some things that you can do or say to yourself to help remind you to be faithful? Tonight, go outside or look out your window to look up at the stars. Can you count the number of stars? Imagine yourself in Abraham’s shoes as you look. Think about the generations that will come after you—the generations that could eventually outnumber the stars. What are you doing today to make sure that the legacy you leave behind helps to point future generations toward a life spent with Christ?
