Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
Where We Belong
Of all the Psalms that David wrote, it is obvious that he found his sense of belonging with God. With God, he found companionship. In God, he found physical safety. We see this in Psalm 57:1. He also found emotional safety to be loved despite himself. He didn’t just feel like he fit in. Instead, he felt free in God’s presence to be his real self – not just the version of himself that was expected. David trusted that God heard him when he prayed and believed in God’s willingness and ability to be there for him, whether that was to comfort him or avenge him or anything in between.
Finding our belonging in this world can be a tricky thing. “Stop walking through the world looking for confirmation that you don’t belong. You will always find it because you’ve made that your mission. Stop scouring people’s faces for evidence that you’re not enough. Your will always find it because that’s your goal... No one belongs here more than you.” (Brene Brown)
Often, we tie our belonging to where we feel safe to be ourselves, where we have shared experiences or values, or where we feel needed. All of that can be found when we journey with God.
GO DEEP: Do you feel free to be yourself with God? If you could tell God anything, what would it be?
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
