Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
When You Are Afraid
What are you afraid of? Some of us might immediately have a full list of physical fears: sharks, clowns, spiders, snakes, heights, diseases, zombie movies. Some of us might list more mental or emotional fears: social interactions, failing, depression, test-taking, speaking in public, not being good enough. We are all afraid of something. What do you do when you are afraid? Do you talk to someone about it? Do you go to your small group or someone in your church? When we were little kids, many of us ran to our mum, dad, or someone who cared for us for comfort when we were scared. They knew exactly what we needed, right? We could crawl up on a lap, snuggle in, and be assured that we were safe. As teens, an open lap and a snuggle might not be our go-to anymore. So where do you go?
Psalm 56:3-4 give us guidance. David says, "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?" So what can you do?
1: Trust that God hears you and is with you when you are afraid.
2: Praise Him...even when you are scared. Not sure what that looks like? Ask a friend or your small group to join you.
3: Remember that there is nothing this world can do to you that is bigger than God.
GO DEEP: What are you afraid of? Tell God and come up with a plan for the next time that fear creeps up.
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
