In Jesus’ Name

Names are powerful! Do you know what your name means? Take a moment to look it up. It might mean something in your language or it might take its meaning from a different language or culture. In some cultures around the world, parents give great thought to the meaning behind a name and use its meaning to pray blessings over the child. In some cultures, names are passed down from generation to generation in hopes that the characteristics of family members are also passed down.

God's name is also powerful. Verse 1 is a prayer, "O God, save me by YOUR NAME, and vindicate me by your might." Just saying the name of Jesus in a room can change the atmosphere. It can chase away darkness and bring authority to your words. Have you ever been alone in a dark and scary place and tried saying God's name out loud? Have you ever repeated "Holy Spirit, come, Holy Spirit, come" in a situation that needed His presence? Have you ever been alone with negative thoughts and said the name "Jesus" to help you break out of the cycle? Have you ever ended your prayer with, "In Jesus' name we pray, amen”?

Paul tried it in Acts 16:18 when he was being followed by a girl who was possessed by the enemy: "Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, 'I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.' And it came out that very hour.” No, this isn't a remedy or a formula for getting the enemy to leave you alone, but it is an example of the power of God's name. Get used to using God's name out loud. He hears you.
