Psalms Streak: A Daily Devotional in the PsalmsSample
Stained Socks
For those who have grown up with the conveniences of a washing machine or land littered with snow, some of the beautiful imagery of this Psalm is lost. See, the washing machine takes the tough work out of making soiled garments clean again. Imagine a brand new pair of white socks. They are so clean, so smart looking, so white. But then we make a poor choice and wear them in the mucky garden. Now those beautiful white socks are dirty, stained, and not welcome to be worn in the house. Getting them white again will not be easy.
Psalm 51:7- “Soak me in your laundry and I’ll come out clean, scrub me and I’ll have a snow-white life.”
Just like those socks, our spiritual self becomes stained and muddy by our sin and poor choices, and becoming clean again is not just an easy trip to the washing machine. It’s a labour of love. It requires time to soak; to soak in God’s Word, in prayer, and in worship. It takes a strong scrubbing to remove the stains. This process isn’t easy. It’s not comfortable. But when we give ourselves to God, He can make us like brand new white socks, clean like a fresh blanket of new snow.
GO DEEP: What part of yourself do you need to give to God for Him to clean and make new again? Why have you held on to it? Be honest. Take a deep breath, pray, and give it to God now.
BE BOLD: Who needs to hear this? Who could you share it with?
