Through the Bible: Jeremiah

DAY 3 OF 19

Have We Switched Off The Lights?

Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the rules of the Lord.
Jeremiah 8:7 (ESV)
The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them?
Jeremiah 8:9 (ESV)

Jeremiah was ministering during a difficult time in Israel’s history. It was a time when the word of the Lord was rejected and evil ensued. In Jeremiah 8:7, Jeremiah said that even the stork and swallow obey God; when the season of migratory birds comes, they will move accordingly, but not man.

When God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Ps. 119:105), the rejection of God’s word is like trying to see by switching off all the lights. Worse still, as opposed to returning to the Lord through repentance, the nation of Judah reached for other idols, further blindfolding themselves from the warnings that came through the suffering at that time.  The nation even closed its ears to the call from the Lord through the prophets, further slipping into self-destruction.

Everything written in the past was written to teach us (Romans 15:4a). Today, is there anything that causes us to reject what is in the word of the Lord?

Prayer

Father God thank You for giving us the Scriptures that enable us to know You and Your ways. Ignite the fire in us for Your word, and help us to see and experience the treasures in the Book that is passed down to us with blood and sweat. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

About this Plan

Through the Bible: Jeremiah

Jeremiah, the author of this book, was born in approximately 650 BC. He was called by God to prophesy to the southern kingdom of Judah of the imminent judgement due to their disobedience to God. Often mocked and beaten for his prophecies, Jeremiah remained faithful to his calling. Though Judah was given forty years to repent, the people continued in sin and were eventually exiled to Babylon in 586 BC.
