Through the Bible: Jeremiah

DAY 19 OF 19

God is the God of Nations

Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon; make the watch strong; set up watchmen; prepare the ambushes; for the Lord has both planned and done what he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon. O you who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come; the thread of your life is cut.
Jeremiah 51:12-13 (ESV)

This prophecy was spoken by Jeremiah at the height of the glory of Babylon. It was the most magnificent city the world had seen then. They had conquered nations, including Judah, and built the famous hanging gardens, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. But God says they will be destroyed, by the king of Medes. And it came to pass. God had used Babylon to punish Judah, but the arrogance and pride of Babylon were also their downfall. The great empire of Babylon lasted 73 years and then fell. Jerusalem laid empty and ruined for just seventy years, then they came back and began to rebuild it and it is still there.

Prayer

Dear God, You are the sovereign God who is all knowing, all powerful and Your wisdom is above man’s intelligence. The fate of nations is in Your hands. You will not allow sin to continue but You desire none to perish and thus You have redeemed us from our wrong doings. Thank You Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 18

About this Plan

Through the Bible: Jeremiah

Jeremiah, the author of this book, was born in approximately 650 BC. He was called by God to prophesy to the southern kingdom of Judah of the imminent judgement due to their disobedience to God. Often mocked and beaten for his prophecies, Jeremiah remained faithful to his calling. Though Judah was given forty years to repent, the people continued in sin and were eventually exiled to Babylon in 586 BC.
