Spiritual DisciplineSample
TRAINING
Many people usually combine two kinds of exercises when they want to lose weight and maintain fitness. The first one is passive exercise, which refers to the act of refraining themselves by following a certain diet. The second one is active exercise, which refers to an exercise to burn excess calories and fat. Doing just one exercise will not make the process as effective as we hope for.
That is what happens in spiritual discipline. Spiritual discipline is a part of our worship to God. There is an active discipline (the discipline of involvement which refers to something we do) and a passive discipline (the discipline of abstinence which refers to something we avoid). This discipline also deals with the types of sins we face. There is a sin of transgression, which refers to the actions that actively violate God's commandments (1 John 3: 4). There is also a sin of neglect which refers to the actions that passively neglect the good deeds that we should be doing (James 4:17).
This spiritual discipline is very beneficial for our spiritual fitness. We will get stronger when we are spiritually healthy. The focus of our life will be right which is to please God. This spiritual discipline is important. It will help us face the sin of neglect. On the other hand, we will also be helped through the discipline of abstaining when we struggle with our sins. For example, we can solve depression by practicing celebrating and giving thanks for our lives. When we are struggling with greed, we can practice giving. Conversely, if we like to gossip, we can practice keeping our mouths shut. If we like to exaggerate things, we can practice telling the truth.
Spiritual discipline is a means to achieve our goal—which is spiritual fitness. The goal of spiritual fitness is useful in this life as well as in the life to come.

About this Plan
Every person will surely grow both physically and spiritually. Physically, we need food to support our body’s growth. Spiritually, we also need spiritual food, which is the word of God, to support our spiritual condition. We need to make sure that our daily spiritual food is sufficient and nutritious. Let’s have spiritual discipline so that our spiritual life will grow faster and higher.
