Can You Keep a Secret?
Proverbs 11:13
A person who gossips can’t keep secrets. But a trustworthy person can keep a secret.
A gossiper is a person who knows about someone’s secret and reveals the secrets to others. Sometimes, a gossiper does not only reveal someone's information to others, but also creates false stories or statements about others. A gossiper simply finds joy in talking about others.
God dislikes gossip because it can hurt others. It damages reputations, destroys friendships, breaks families and even demolishes someone’s future. Those who engage in gossip do nothing but stirring up trouble and causing anger, bitterness and pain.
When your friend shares their secrets with you, it means they trust you. You have to keep their secret safe. Do not gossip around with it. It will only hurt your friend.
When someone starts to gossip, don’t participate in it. Just change the subject, or simply walk away. Let’s guard our mouth and tongue to refrain from the sinful act of gossiping.
Prayer
Dear God, help me to use my mouth wisely and keep my mouth to speak only appropriate things. Amen.
